INTENSIVE GOLDSMITHING
Three month Course
October – December quarter
January – March quarter
April – June quarter
The first module aims at acquiring sufficient manual dexterity and precision in the use of the fundamental tools of the goldsmith’s work (files, fretwork, burins, hammer, pliers, measuring instruments, etc.), understanding the rules of metal construction (proper use of welds, design of flat 3D shapes, precision assemblies, assembly procedures, finishing techniques) and at refining the taste for beautiful design and a polished work.
The second module is entirely devoted to the chiselling technique, which is the oldest and most noble decorative art to be used on metal. At the beginning of the course students will learn about manufacturing chisels and pitch, fundamental steps for the chiseller, who usually makes his own working tools. We move on to chiselling flat slabs, facing gradually the difficulties that this technique presents.
The third module, the only one which requires a prior technical knowledge, further refines the construction techniques learned in the first trimester. There are fewer exercises of greater complexity which require the creation of a personal project designed and crafted by the student. We will also learn the torch-fired enameling technique. Throughout the three modules the students will gain experience on stone setting.
