INTENSIVE COURSE IN SCULPTURE
Three month Course
October – December quarter
January – March quarter
April – June quarter
This trimester is an introduction to drawing from life with a model. The figure will be at the center of the program. The student must take into account three main elements when examining the live model: proportion, gesture and tone. To obtain these elements, the student must approach the drawing in two ways: linearly, by which he draws precisely the contour line and the shadow, or mass, obtained by comparing the forms of light and the forms of shadow.
Apart from the drawing lessons, the students will be able to learn the structure of the human body in the course of Anatomy.
The students will begin by studying the features of the David, followed by the human skull and classical busts as preparation for portraits from life.
The second module will be largely devoted to portraiture, drapery studies and half size figures from a variety of brief poses and models for differing proportions/body types followed with long-term poses. As students advance, specific iconography will be introduced with the application of drapery to the figure to compose the work in its entirety. Basic relief ‘pseudo-form’ exercises may be given to advance students only following the thorough study of three-dimensional form.
The ‘lavoro individuale’ sessions may be utilized to continue the exercises outlined in the program or for the development of bottega commissions with student participation chosen at the discretion of the instructor.
In the third module, the students will be expected to pursue a complete half-size figure composition with drapery and advanced student may choose to do a full-scale (life-size) composition at the discretion of the instructor.
